Leading an organisation is an artform. Workforce challenges, technology, stakeholder expectations, financial constraints. The brief is the decision in a form that exists outside the room. A decision that only ever lived in a conversation gets softened by Wednesday and renegotiated by Friday. A decision on a page you have handed to your chair, your executive team or your board does not.
It is the artefact you are paying for. Not the hours. A playbook can give you the four moves. It cannot tell you which one you are skipping, and it cannot produce this page, because the page needs someone across the table whose only agenda is your call.
For some, the brief is the whole engagement: decisions made, direction set, done. Where it surfaces a bigger piece of work, that conversation happens at the end of session three, not before it.
One session buys an opinion. Three buys a decision you will still hold in a month, because the two weeks between sessions are where the work happens: the reality you stated meets a real week, and the direction you chose gets road-tested before you put people and budget behind it.
Cutting it to one session does not cut the price by two thirds. It removes the two decisions, which is the only thing the price is for.
I ran strategy for organisations for thirty years and spent ten of these codifying it. The whole time, one client never got a minute of my strategic expertise: me.
